Hi, my name is Sarah. I am an experienced and qualified Support Worker with more than 15 years’ experience working as both a direct care provider as well as a program coordinator. I have supported individuals of many support needs and ages and had the privilege of getting to know many participants and their families. In my role as coordinator, I was heavily involved in recruitment and staff support. I have been working as an independent support provider for the last 3 years, learning all I can about the ins and outs of the NDIS and I can help my clients use their funding creatively to their advantage.
I started Hero Support because I wanted to offer my clients the “best of both worlds” when it comes to choosing a support worker.
When engaging your support through a big company, you have the reassurance that there is someone there to ensure your workers are keeping up to date with NDIS requirements & industry check requirements. You also have the knowledge that they have other support workers available if your regular worker takes leave or is sick. However, with big companies, participants have often complained of feeling like “just a number”, not being kept in the loop with changes to their workers availability and even having their workers cancelled & swapped around last minute without being consulted or even updated.
On the flip side, when hiring an independent support worker, clients have said they are happy with the loyalty of their support worker, they feel secure knowing that the worker needs them just as much as they need their worker because the worker is running their own business and they are depending on their good reputation to continue the arrangement. However, some may feel uneasy with the idea that the worker has no one to ‘answer’ to, no-one to make sure their checks and insurance are kept up to date and no-one to go to for support to ensure they are making the right decisions when it comes to best practice. It is exhausting to think that if they leave, you’ll have to spend time searching for someone else to fill the gap and have to tell them all over again of your support needs and goals. It is also worrying to know that they may need to take leave unexpectedly and that leaves you without support.
At Hero Support, I wanted to take all the upsides and none of the downsides.
